In November, we celebrate Black Consciousness Day (Dia da Consciência Negra). We want to show the world the history and work of incredible Black Brazilians!
Our focus is on the Present Simple!

Let's begin...
Antonieta de Barros is a journalist and teacher. She is from Florianopolis. She lives in Santa Catarina. She becomes the first Black woman in the Brazilian Parliament. She fights for education and women’s rights. Her legacy inspires the current politics. The school remembers her commitment.
Antonieta believes that education is the key to change. She founds her own school, the Curso Particular Antonieta de Barros, to teach poor people. She also writes a lot. She creates her own newspaper, A Semana, and she publishes more than a thousand articles in her career. She uses the pseudonym Maria da Ilha. Her writing criticizes racism and sexism.
As a politician, Antonieta proposes important laws. She creates a law that institutes the Teacher’s Day (Dia do Professor) in Santa Catarina. The country adopts this date nationally later. Today, her name is in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland. Her history motivates students and leaders, and she represents Black women in power.
